Hudson County Sheriff Makes 15 Arrests in Latest Warrants Sweep

A West New York woman wanted in connection with the alleged theft of $40,000 in E-ZPass use by Crown Transportation was arrested Monday in a warrant sweep that netted 15 Hudson County residents, officials said yesterday.

Described as a “duly authorized agent” of Crown Transportation, Dana Tamily, of Polk Street in West New York, was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court related to a theft charge, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said.

64 in Hudson County picked up as 'deadbeat dads,' including one man who owes $158,000, officials say

The Hudson County Sheriff's Office has arrested 64 "deadbeat dads" who owe a total of nearly $970,000 in child support and they also picked up 11 people wanted on criminal warrants, officials said.

"Pay up or get locked up," warned Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari in a press release on the three-day warrant sweep ending Thursday.

At the top of the list of those arrested for nonsupport is Demetrious G. Margetis, 46, of Country Village Road in Jersey City, who owes $158,000, authorities said. Margetis is the former owner of what was The Colonette Restaurant on Route 440 in Jersey City, officials said.

Hudson County Sheriff's Office Conducting This Year's Click it or Ticket Campaign Through June 3

Law enforcement officers from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office will be cracking down on unbuckled motorists and their passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.

The initiative, which began on Tuesday and will run through June 3, includes high-visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts.

6 From Hudson County Arrested, 2 Still at Large as International Auto Theft Operation Shut Down; 19 charged

Six Hudson County residents were arrested yesterday in a statewide sweep by federal, state and local officials who broke up an international car theft ring that exported vehicles to various African nations, officials said.

The arrests disrupted a smuggling operation at New Jersey’s ports and recovered more than 200 vehicles valued at more than $6 million. Eleven of 19 people charged were arrested by yesterday.

Hudson County Sheriff's Officers Recognize, and Arrest, Hit-Run Suspect Near Crash Scene the Day After

Sharp-eyed Hudson County Sheriff’s officers caught a suspected hit-and-run driver Tuesday after the Bayonne man returned near the scene to have his car towed, officials said yesterday.

Andres Palacios, 37, was southbound on Route 1&9 in Jersey City around 4 a.m. Monday when his vehicle struck a car at the intersection of Route 1&9 and Newark Avenue, officials said.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 55-year-old New York man, was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center to be treated for arm, back and leg injuries, police said.

Hudson County Sheriff Says Discovery of Marijuana in Home Brings New Jersey City University Student’s Arrest

Two pounds of suspected marijuana and $12,000 was found by Hudson County sheriff’s officers while serving a restraining order at the home of a New Jersey City University student in Greenville Monday, reports said.

Aldrin Lopez, 28, of Culver Avenue, turned himself in Tuesday and is charged with numerous drug counts, including possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana/hashish with intent to distribute near a school and near public property, reports said.

The investigation began when Lopez’s ex-girlfriend went to the Sheriff’s Office on Monday and said he had threatened her, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said.

Fire in trailer at county jail

A maintenance trailer at the Hudson County jail in Kearny caught on fire yesterday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responding to the jail on a 10:55 a.m. alarm found the trailer, located outside the jail, in flames, Kearny Fire Chief Steve Dyl said.

The fire was placed under control by 11:28 a.m. and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Dyl said.

Hudson County Sheriff's Office Still Hunting Altima Driver in Hoboken Hit-Run

Authorities are still looking for the driver of a Nissan Altima that struck a 24-year-old city man as he was getting out of a taxi early Saturday morning on Washington Street at 12th Street in Hoboken.

The Nissan Altima, which was described by the New York cab driver as being beige-colored, fled the scene, police said.

The incident occurred at 2:40 a.m. as the man was getting out of a Toyota Sienna cab, police reports said.

The 24-year-old has been at the Jersey City Medical Center receiving treatment for multiple fractures.

Hudson County Sheriff’s Officers Arrest 25 Men in FBI Sweep

Twenty-five men wanted on a variety of charges were arrested this past weekend during a countywide sweep led by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies.

“Remember, our families wait for us,” Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari told the more than 80 officers on Friday when he urged them to be careful while taking the wanted men off the streets of Hudson County.

Other officers participating in the sweep were from the FBI, DEA, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and other agencies.
